Dining Deals: Authentic Chilean Cuisine At Pomaire

NEW YORK (CBS) ― For this week's Dining Deal, CBS 2's Tony Tantillo visits an established restaurant that has long been recognized for serving up great food at great prices. What's even better, is that it fills a niche for hard to find: authentic Chilean cuisine.

Pomaire is located in the heart of theater row in midtown Manhattan, and it's a restaurant that tells a story of its very own, an authentic taste of Chile.

The atmosphere is relaxed and welcoming, loaded with the heart and soul of its celebrated country.

"Most of our food is very fresh, and most of the produce is organic," owner Denic Catalan said. "We are using local farmers."

Whatever ingredients are not found locally are flown in fresh from Chile, like beautiful Chilean sea bass.

At Pomaire, much of the food is made by hand, like their rich empanadas.

The empanadas are stuffed with lean ground beef, with raisins added for sweetness, along with olives and eggs. The edges are folded to seal in all of the flavors.

Pomaire also offers a rich and tasty casserole, which is a delicious blend of meat and corn

Pomaire's signature Chilean sea bass is simply prepared, using only salt, pepper and oil.

"You want the fish to have the flavor, you don't want to cover it," Catalan said.

The restaurant also features what looks like a corn tamale, which Chileans call a "tomita," which means bowtie and describes the dish's unique appearance.

Pomaire's ceviche is fresh and loaded with flavor, prepared with a generous mix of seafood and peppers.

Another specialty is the bread and salsa, for which Pomaire is well-known.

Pomaire is an authentic restaurant and a true find in New York, located on 46th Street between 8th and 9th Avenues.
