Foods That Shrink Your Waistline, Not Your Wallet

YONKERS (CBS) ― Losing weight is one of the top New Year's resolutions for many people. So is saving money.

To the surprise of many, you can do both in this tough economy.

Finding foods that help your waistline and your bottom-line is not as hard as most people think.

"It's actually a myth that you can't eat healthfully on a budget," Self magazine nutrition expert Tula Karras says. "Once you start to scrutinize your grocery list, you're probably going to find areas in which you can eat more healthfully and save money at the same time."

Karras says to take a moment to analyze your grocery list and think of alternatives for expensive items.

"Canned salmon is very close nutritionally to fresh salmon, and it's far less expensive," Karras says. "You're getting your Omega-3's, which are great for hearth health, so it's something to consider for your budget."

If you're a meat-lover, try to opt for ground beef instead of filets – you get the same nutritional value at a much cheaper price.

"Soup is so wonderful in so many ways – there's actually been research that shows if you start your meal with a bowl of broth, like soup, like chicken broth, you're going to eat 100 calories less at the end of a meal," Karras says. "So it's a filling option, and it's a great way to incorporate a lot of other healthy foods in there.

"Vegetables, you can cook a whole chicken [and] throw the leftovers in the soup, and a little bit of soup does go a long way in terms of filling you up," Karras says.

When you buy fresh produce, buy in bulk and consider what's in season. Right now, that's apples, pears, and oranges – a lot of citrus – which will definitely be cheaper than out-of-season fruit flown in from other countries.
