NY Senator Calls For Overhaul Of Food Safety Laws

NEW YORK (AP) ― Fresh vegetables. Glazed ham. Preserved olives. Chicken frankfurters.

According to data compiled by U.S. Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand's staff, those are just a few examples of over 900 food products that have been recalled from New York City shelves since 2005 for various violations.

The senator held a news conference on Sunday to call attention to the need for overhauling the nation's food safety laws.

Gillibrand is the first New York senator in 40 years to sit on a congressional committee responsible for developing policies for food production and oversight.

She says she plans to introduce a bill that would mandate E. coli inspections of all ground beef.

Currently, meat grinders aren't required to test their ingredients for the virus.
