Dining Deals: The Smith
American Bistro Boasts Large Portions Of American Comfort Food At Low Prices
NEW YORK (CBS) ―
The casual vibe felt at The Smith restaurant is a perfect compliment to its East Village neighborhood.
One of its managing partners, Jeffrey Lefcourt, said the restaurant puts a spin on classic American dishes.
"The Smith is our version of an American bistro," Lefcourt said. "It's a brasserie that you can come to for breakfast, lunch and dinner, with very accessible, moderate prices and with great food that comforts everybody."
The Smith is located on Manhattan's Third Avenue between 10th Street and 11th Street. It boasts dishes to suit every taste, as its kitchen frequently churns out inventive takes on customer favorites.
"A lot of the food we do here is pretty recognizable food," said executive chef Glen Harris. "Like the avocado salad for example. It's kind of a play on guacamole. We made it into a salad instead of mashing it up into a paste."
One of The Smith's most popular dishes is its macaroni and cheese, which boasts a hearty portion of pasta smothered in four different types of cheeses for a mere $10.
Also popular is the $5 order of tempura string beans, which make a great shared appetizer.
"You can actually taste the bean, not just the batter," said CBS 2 HD's restaurateur Tony Tantillo.
The Smith's "Bim Bim Bop" is a play on a classic Korean dish.
"We use sushi rice to make it," Harris said of the Bim Bim Bop. "There's shiitake mushrooms in there and Edam cheese, and it's topped with a fried egg."
Harris added the bistro's Ahi tuna salad, made with only the highest-quality of ingredients, is a generous portion of food for just 18 bucks.
