Sanitation Begin Picking Up Christmas Trees Thurs.

NEW YORK (AP) ― What to do with your Christmas tree?

New York City sanitation begins picking up trees at the curb on Thursday. However, the trees must be free of all tinsel, lights, ornaments and stands.

Sanitation will collect trees through Jan. 16.

Commissioner John Doherty says the trees will be chipped and turned into mulch that is used at city parks, ballfields and community gardens. Residents will be able to get the mulch for their own use beginning this Saturday and Sunday, at the "annual mulchfest" held at various parks in the five boroughs.

Last year sanitation collected over 166,000 trees.
