NYC Landmarks Go Green For Earth Day

NEW YORK (AP) ― Grand Central Terminal and the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge are going green for Earth Day -- and beyond.

On the bridge between Staten Island and Brooklyn, maintenance workers are replacing conventional necklace lights with energy efficient LEDs.

And at Grand Central, Metro-North Railroad has completed the conversion from incandescent light bulbs to longer-lasting compact fluorescent bulbs.

The railroad says the new bulbs also have another green effect. They'll save more than $100,000 a year on utility bills -- plus thousands of dollars in replacement costs.

In 1913, when Grand Central Terminal opened, the streets of New York still had gaslights. Metro-North says the bare light bulbs throughout Grand Central Terminal were intended to advertise the fact that electricity had arrived.
