Green Beauty Products: How Effective Are They?
NEW YORK (CBS) ―
From nail polish to hair spray, even cosmetics are going green. But do these environmentally-friendly products hold up against your less eco-friendly favorites?
It's the ultimate mascara test: cutting onions. To put a new eco-friendly mascara to the test, we turned to stay-at-home mom Madison Wellington. On one eye she wears the green brand, and her favorite mascara on the other. Then she started chopping.
Wellington happily found both mascaras didn't run.
"How long does it last? Is it better or worse? Am I going to have a, um, allergic reaction from it?" asks Susie Galvez, author of "Ageless Remedies." Galvez says these are all questions many women have when faced with buying "all natural" cosmetics. After trying them out, more women are converting.
Tanya Acker painted traditional nail polish on one hand, and an all-natural alternative on the other. Then she took on a sink full of dishes.
"I find the natural polish, it held up incredibly well," Acker told CBS 2.
Some women say all-natural nail polish works so well, it's harder to get off.
How about certified organic hairspray?
"It was a little lemony," said student Royals Digler, who tried it out. Digler said she liked the feel of a new type of green hairspray and loves the company's claim even more – that it's safe enough to drink!
"So I guess it's safe enough for my hair," she says.
While eco-beauty products may have come along way, experts say make sure you're getting what you pay for. So read and understand the ingredients list and if you have a bad reaction stop using the product.
