Cleaning Green: Eco-Friendly Products

NEW YORK (CBS) ― The effectiveness of conventional cleaning products is not in question, but the long term and caustic effects of some of the chemicals they contain may be. Now there are green and eco-friendly products available in just about every home category to help get any job done just as efficiently.

"We put all these childhood lock on kitchen cabinets so the kids can't come in and touch our cleaning products then we're taking them out and we're wiping the floors with them and wiping the counters with them and the kids are wandering around and touching all these places," said Heather Stephenson, co-founder of idealbite.com.

"Plants actually are what the chemicals are derived from to start with. So when you are taking synthetics out of the products you're actually still using nature to get everything clean and it's just as disinfecting," she said.

Commercial stain removers may contain oil based compounds. "Something like ecover stain remover, it's made out of plant based ingredients. One of the main products in this is salt completely all natural, you can feel better about putting it on your clothes," she said.

Some bathroom cleaning products are known to be harsh, and leave chemical residues. now there are green alternatives to consider.

"Le Scrub by method - the bottle is just cool. It comes with this little scrubbie thing that you can put here so you can keep it by the tub. The scrubbing products in it are actually recycled content," she said.

This natural counter top cleaner has a lavender scent, and also comes in cucumber or grapefruit.

There are natural product alternatives for dishwashers and hand sanitizers too.

"This product doesn't have the chemicals in it and gets your hands really clean so you don't have to worry so much about passing germs," she said.

One floor mop has a pad that can be machine washed and comes in recycled packaging and as for where we put all our garbage.

"We are actually seeing a lot more bags made of corn plastic and they can biodegrade and can break down over time," she said

"The more that people know about the products they are putting in their homes, the more careful they are going to be about what they put around their kids and families," she said.
