Eco-Friendly Products Are More Afforable Than Ever

NEW YORK (CBS) ― Solar panels and green roofs are excellent ways to go green at home. But there are cheaper, easier ways to be eco-friendly thanks to new sustainable home products.

"A great way to become more eco-friendly in the kitchen is with bamboo products," said Ryan Smith, deputy editor of TheNest.com. "Bamboo is sustainable. It's re-harvested every four and a half years."

Bamboo cheeseboards, salad bowls, and utensils are one quick way to color your kitchen green.

Nichelle Stephens from "Going Green At Home" said, "Simple things like that, you don't have to be a so-called hippie or someone from California to do."

Another way is to use recycled stemware. The Green Glass company cuts bottles in half to create goblets out of the tops and tumblers out of the bottoms.

"It's just as easy to buy a recycled item or to reuse something in your house as it is to buy a new product," explained Cara Alhadeff.

Stores like 3RLiving in Brooklyn also offer placemats made of recycled magazines and rugs from recycled plastic. At Manhattan's Organic Avenue you can pick up blankets woven from Ahimsa Peace silk and towels made from organic cotton.

"Conventional cotton has tons of pesticides and chemicals, poured on the crops then the product that goes on the consumer is also potentially still harboring toxins." Denise Mari from Organic Avenue said. "With organic cotton there are sustainable practices no chemical pesticides used and it just creates a purer product."

Environmentalists said today's recycled and organic products aren't just good for the environment, they're actually healthier for you and your family.
