CBS 2 Goes Green: Green Products Expo

NEW YORK (CBS) ― With all of the problems related to the recession and loss of jobs, there are some businesses that are seeing expansion possibilities. The latest in green products can mean consumers saving green and businesses that hope to see black in their bottom line.

CBS 2HD's Elise Finch got a look at the latest offerings at the Green Product Expo.

"We're seeing more along the lines of companies focusing more on the their core manufacturing and their green practices overall versus having a single product line of green products," said show organizer Kevin Nichols.

That means better, easier and even cost saving options to integrate green into every part of your home, including the bathroom.

An aerator in the faucet can save you thousands of gallons a year, but Kohler has their eyes on a larger drain.

"Basically you have two buttons: a number one button would be for number one, number two button would be for number two. So little tricks like that where you can regulate the flushes will pick up about 4,000 to 6,000 gallons of water a year," said Ed Del grande of Kohler.

And for the pre-potty crowd, cloth diapers are making a big comeback with earth friendly fibers, and an overall lower long term cost.

"With $350, you can do more than one child with that, from birth to potty training versus $1,500 depending on when your child is potty trained," said Murray Pierce from Maine Diaper Co.

Taking out the trash is more eco friendly now. "Our plastics break down in 12 to 24 months and leave no methane gas behind," said Tony Tracy of Perf Go Green.

And recyclables, such as newspaper are transformed into imaginative accessories, while cardboard has evolved well beyond packing material.

Some green housewares change shape so you buy one item for multiple design options.

"Eventually there won't be a Green Product Expo, because green will be the norm, and that's what we're focusing on," Nichols said.
