National Parking Day Turns Spaces Into Oases In NY

Welcome To National Parking Day 2008 In NYC!

50 Parking Spaces Given Back To The People Of The Big Apple For A Day

NEW YORK (CBS) ― You may not know it, but Friday is National Parking Day. The idea is to turn parking spaces into green spaces, at least temporarily. And after a particularly rough week, it's likely a welcome change for New Yorkers.

Welcome to Parking Day 2008! It's happening in more than 70 cities across the country. Here in New York City, 50 parking spots will be given back to the people of the Big Apple.

Last year it was 20 parking spaces. This year it's 50 plots of 90-square-feet each that are being converted from places where you park your car into temporary human-friendly places where people can hang out, chat, play and meet their neighbors.

Transportation Alternatives is a non-profit group that wants to reclaim New York City streets from the automobiles and give them back to cyclists, walkers and those who use mass transit. Fifty parking spots in all turned into mini-oases until 5 p.m. Friday afternoon.
