NYC Restaurants Complying With Calorie Rule

NEW YORK (AP) ― New York health officials say most city restaurants are complying with new rules requiring them to list calorie counts on their menus.

City inspectors cited just nine restaurants for failing to post calorie counts in the first week after they began enforcing the rule on July 19.

They included a Dunkin' Donuts and a McDonald's in Manhattan, a Kentucky Fried Chicken in Queens and a hotel near Kennedy Airport.

The head of the city's enforcement program says the violations appeared to be oversights, not defiance.

Associate health commissioner Elliott Marcus says every major chain is now posting calorie counts.

He says the city is going easy on fines for now, as long as a restaurant appears to be making an honest effort to comply.
