Study: Mediterranean Diet Can Fight The Blues

DENVER (CBS) ― A new study from the Archives of General Psychiatry has more evidence that what you eat has a big impact on your mood, CBS station KCNC-TV reports.

The researchers looked at the diets of 10,000 people and found those who mainly ate a Mediterranean diet had half the rate of depression of those who did not.

"That's a diet made up of mainly fruits, vegetables, beans, fish, nuts, whole grain cereals and olive oil," KCNC-TV's Medical Correspondent Dr. Hnida explained. "That olive oil is fatty but is a monounsaturated fat, a good fat unlike the saturated fats you find snacks and junk food."

Researchers said the foods help by boosting the levels of brain chemicals which in turn can boost mood. "The more of these chemicals you make, the happier you are," Hnida said.

The foods also improve the flow of blood to brain cells in the same fashion they improve blood flow in the heart vessels. That makes both the heart and the brain healthier.

"And finally, the diet basically lubricates the connections between brain cells, so you not only feel better," Hnida said. "You think better. It is important to understand this diet will not cure major clinical depression, but every little bit helps."
