Consumer: The 10 Anti-Aging Commandments
NEW YORK (CBS) ―
When it comes to skin care, there's a never-ending search for the secrets to anti-again.
From basic advice to tricks of the skin trade, CBS 2 learned the commandments of maintaining a youthful appearance.
Everyone knows the basics to follow to look and feel their best.
It's essential to eat a good diet, get plenty of sleep, avoid smoking and drinking to excess, drink lots of water, and to maintain good hygiene.
But in looking youthful, Kristin Perotta, beauty editor at Allure Magazine, the number one commandment is one that's often overlooked.
"The biggest thing that you can do to protect yourself is wear sunscreen," Perotta says. "The sun is what causes 90 percent of your wrinkles."
Pelotta says to look for brands with helioplex and mexoral for broad spectrum and long lasting protection, and to wear it every day on all exposed skin.
"[Another] one of the most important anti-aging commandments is not to forget about your hands," Pelotta says.
Sunscreen is also a must on your hands, which can develop unsightly signs of aging.
"Use whatever is left on the back of your hands," Pelotta says. "Your hands reveal your age as much as your face does."
Another tip is to use your facial products on your hands for ultimate care.
"If youre going for a moisturizer, for example, the 2 ingredients that dermatologists are just wild for and they're not expensive are shea butter and petrolatum," Pelotta says.
Using those products on damp skin will help to hold in moisture.
"Eyes are the one part of the body women are obsessed with," Pelotta says.
Another tip is to look for a product with peptides. They're non-irritating and will help with lines and crepe-like skin.
"The number one most-tested, most-proven anti-aging ingredient is retinol an over-the-counter version of vitamin A," Pelotta says. "It has been around forever, and has been proven to make a big difference."
It's widely available, gently exfoliates and helps in collagen production.
"These are things that can really make a huge difference over time, and don't take a ton of money to do," Pelotta says.
Making small changes in your daily behavior can also help save your skin. Not squinting will protect your eyes from aging, and avoiding drinking through a straw can help keep the skin around your mouth looking youthful.
