Childhood cancer is the number one disease killer of children in the United States. It's a devastating diagnosis, but many parents are also devastated when they find that treatments are limited because research funds are scarce.
Now there is something that can be done to help raise money and give these kids a shot at the long life they deserve.
At a Greenwich Village bake sale, cookies are being sold with a specific cause in mind. All of the money raised will go to the fight against childhood cancer.
"People want to help [but] the just don't know how to," Michelle Jassem, volunteer for Cookies for Cancer, said. "This is an easy way that people can wrap their head around, an easy way to help."
It's a fight that 4-year-old Liam Witt has been battling for a year-and-a-half. We first told you about Liam and his fight against cancer in February, and now he's fighting a minor recurrence.
"It's been tough," Liam's mother Gretchen said. "We're logging a lot of hours at the hospital again, but we have no reason to think other than he will be fine."
The Witt family is dedicated to raising awareness and funds for research.
"When your child is battling a disease like Liam is battling, you feel helpless," Gretchen said. "You are at the mercy of what modern medicine knows, [but] you also feel like there has to be something that can be done."
And so Cookies for Kids' Cancer was born. It's Web site helps you with everything you need to hold a fundraising bake sale, from recipes to banners and location suggestions.
"Now what we're doing is saying you, in this community, you can get involved," Gretchen said. "You can make a difference, and you can do this too."
Jassem's bake sale raised over $1,000, but it's just one of the many sales being held around the country that are helping to fight childhood cancer one cookie at a time.
"We can do this if people come together for a cause," Gretchen said. "We can really make a difference, I believe that in my heart."
