Lose 20 Lbs. In Time For Summer With DTOUR Diet

NEW YORK (CBS) ― A new diet is out just in time for the summer, and it promises to have you losing more than 20 pounds in six weeks – but that's not all.

The DTOUR diet may also help fight a common disease.

Kris and Randy Sumey are eating pizza, and still losing weight.

"This diet's been successful where others haven't because, first of all, you get to eat all of the foods that I love like cheese, olive oil, and pasta," Kris says.

Kris and Randy each lost 26 pounds in five weeks on the DTOUR diet.

"I feel a lot healthier," Randy says. "I have a lot more energy."

Like millions of overweight Americans, Kris developed Type 2 diabetes as a result of weight gain.

The DTOUR diet aims to control diabetes and obesity by tightly controlling blood sugar.

"Blood sugar and weight are so intimately connected," Marlea Clark, of Prevention Magazine, says. "Having blood sugar that rises and falls leaves you short of energy, and makes it more difficult to lose weight."

The diet works with a combination of food called the "fat fighting four" – vitamin D, calcium, omega-3, and fiber.

"Those four nutrients together create a delicious diet that can really help you keep that blood sugar steady, keep your energy up, and help you lose weight," Clark says.

On the DTOUR diet, low-fat cheese is permitted for the calcium, and antioxidant-rich vegetables are emphasized to keep you feeling full.

All of the food choices are designed to keep blood sugar steady.

Weight loss and exercise can even reverse Type 2 diabetes.

The Sumeys say the easy weight loss motivates them to stay healthy.

"It's a monster to take off," Randy says. "It feels amazing."

It's estimated that at least five million Americans have diabetes and don't know it. Another 57 million are unaware that they're pre-diabetic.

Weight loss can delay the progression to full diabetes, and return blood sugar levels to normal.

Without proper management, diabetes can drastically increase your risk of heart disease, stroke, and nerve and kidney damage.
