Go! New York: Meditation & Movement
New Fitness Trend Blends Basics Of Meditation With Movement
NEW YORK (CBS) ―
It almost sounds too good to be true: a workout that doesn't involve much work! But there's a new fitness trend that blends the basics of meditation with movement. CBS 2 sat in on a class to see what it's all about.
You won't exactly break a sweat participating in 'Meditation and Movement' at Clay Health Club. But according to instructor David Dollase, sometimes a great workout is more than just burning calories and building muscles.
Dollase says it's an attempt to heal the effects of stress.
In our increasingly stressful culture, this new emerging class teaches meditation in a group setting, all with the goal of getting you to slow down.
"When you relax you notice things that you don't normally notice when you are walking. You notice things that are going on," said Dollase.
The class involves small movements done with intense focus.
"The basis of this class is about Chi Gong, or ancient Chinese energy work," he added.
And those who take it, seem to really enjoy it.
"I've been more centered, focused and more serene," said one student. "It really changed my life."
Dollase says he has had students in the class who are resistant to the idea of meditation, but once they understand that focusing on anything that prevents their minds from going into overdrive is considered meditation. It can also change your personality and outlook.
"Well I was an angry guy and it has helped me to let go of that and when I discovered a lot of how simple it is," said Dollase.
