The heat can be dangerous for your health. But taking some simple precautions can make all the difference. CBS 2's Dr. Holly Phillips has details on how to protect yourself and your family.
Heat related illnesses, like heat exhaustion and heat stroke are more common than you might think. Fluids, says Dr. Phillips, are the key to prevention.
You can lose a half-gallon of water in just 10 minutes in 90 degree weather. The best approach, according to Dr. Phillips, is re-hydrate from room temperature water. Sports drinks can be good as long as they are used in moderation. Drinks such as Gatorade specialize in replacing depleted electrolytes.
She also suggests avoiding caffeine, alcohol and sodas because they can cause dehydration, which could be extremely dangerous when trying to ingest more fluids to combat the heat.
Dr. Phillips says it's very critical to curtail outdoor exercises, move slowly and wear light-colored, loose clothing.
If you experience dizziness, weakness or headache, get out of the heat immediately.
