HealthWatch: Acu-Lume Facial Rejuvenation

NEW YORK (CBS) ― In these stressful economic times, combination beauty treatments are growing in popularity.

What could be more appropriate than one that increases beauty, while decreasing stress?

Throughout almost all fields of medicine, both doctors and patients are becoming more committed to combining Eastern and Western techniques, and nowhere is it more popular than in the arena of aesthetics.

Now, a breakthrough procedure, created right here in New York, is toning faces – and calming minds.

A high-tech laser treatment is being combined with the ancient Chinese art of acupuncture.

Roni Elovitch is undergoing the latest craze in facial rejuvenation: the Acu-Lume facial, developed by NY dermatologist Dr. David Colbert.

"We noticed there was a special need for things that are lest costly in this environment, but also things that bring Easter and Western medicine together," Dr. Colbert says. "And so I think lasers are the best of Western medicine, and I think that acupuncture is the pinnacle of Eastern medicine."

The Acu-Lume facial starts with a laser light treatment.

"The laser recruits collagen and mitochondrial energy, because it's stimulating growth of cells and actually molecules," Dr. Colbert says.

Then, acupuncturist Peggy Regis Robinson targets wrinkles and problem areas with her healing needles. They stimulate blood flow and the release of natural calming hormones in the body.

"It's not only for the face – it helps the entire body," Robinson says. "We're true believers in getting rid of the root, not only the symptoms."

Unlike needles used to draw blood, acupuncture needles aren't hollow and also have a blunt tip, making the procedure virtually painless.

"I must look scary, but I feel great," Elovitch says.

"When we're less stressed, we have fewer lines on our face," Dr. Colbert says.

"I feel my face – [it] has a warmth to it," Elovitch says.

And just to lower the stress level further, the Acu-Lume facial has recently been re-priced in keeping with the current economic environment. It used to cost $1,500 per session, but is now $750.
