New Stand-Up Liposuction Procedure

NEW YORK (CBS) ― Sandra Campos was woken up during the middle of surgery. Not for any kind of life-saving procedure, but for the latest kind of cosmetic procedure. It's called stand-up liposuction.

"They are able to stand up, look in the mirror and decide if an area where I've done my liposuction needs a little more or a little less," described Dr. Leonard Grossman.

Traditional liposuction requires patients to lie down completely knocked out by anesthesia but many plastic surgeons, like Dr. Grossman, say the body's fat shifts in the horizontal position, distorting the figure.

By standing Sandra up, Dr. Grossman says he can achieve better results. "We reduce the chance of having her needing or wanting to come back again for a small touch-up and saying, 'doc, you could have removed a little more,' " he explained.

Mildly sedated, a nurse steadies Sandra on her feet while Dr. Grossman removes the unwanted fat from her thigh where she's received a local anesthetic.

"It's just a logical procedure if you think about it," said the Chairman of Plastic Surgery at Hackensack University Medical Center, Dr. Stephen Colen.

He says stand-up liposuction is an excellent technique for small areas but cautions it's not for everybody. "When we do small volume liposuction where someone has a little fat around their hip or a little bit of fat around their thigh, and they don't need tremendous amounts of anesthesia, then stand-up liposuction is great," he said.

"I really thought that I was going to be a little more freaked out," Sandra said.

She's not only happy with her new curves, but she says she enjoyed her own little episode of Nip/Tuck. "I thought it was great," she said. "I could see what was being done while it was being done."

Many doctors say the combination of sedation and local anesthesia avoids many of the dangers associated with general anesthesia. To find out if stand-up liposuction is right for you click on the following link.
