NYC Health Dept. Uses MySpace To Help Teens

NEW YORK (AP) ― The New York City health department has launched a MySpace campaign to help teenagers deal with depression, drugs and violence.

The NYC Teen Mindspace page is posted on MySpace, a popular online social networking site with young people.

The health department says many teens are reluctant to seek help when they have problems. The Mindspace page uses interactive features to help them combat stigma and ask for help.

Users of the site also can obtain referrals for treatment by sending a confidential message to a mental health counselor.

The health department says 20 percent of NYC teens say they do not talk to anyone when they feel sad; 31 percent say they talk to a friend and 32 percent say they talk to an adult.
