Go! NY Report: Sound Wave Cellulite Treatments

NEW YORK (CBS) ― A revolutionary way to get rid of cellulite and fat, and it involves no surgery, no needles, and no medications.

Karen O'Brien says she has trouble finding clothes because of one problem area.

"I have a little extra tush behind me that I don't particularly care for, that I can't seem to get off with diet and exercise," O'Brien says.

So she turned plastic surgeon Dr. Brian Buinewicz for a new treatment that claims to melt fat and smooth out cellulite.

"There are skinny people who have cellulite, normal people that have cellulite," Dr. Buinewicz says. "It's mostly the female population."

Dr. Buinewicz is part of a clinical trial testing "cellupulse." It works with acoustic sound waves.

The technology was first designed to treat sports injuries. The sound waves shock the tissue, which increases blood flow.

It was being used on skiers with hamstring injuries when the trainers discovered an unexpected side effect: cellulite was disappearing.

"So they just took that application for muscle injury and they expanded it into the skin," Dr. Buinewicz says.

He says the sound waves on fat tissue make it shrink, and it can be used on other areas like the stomach.

"It's pretty dramatic how much fat you can reduce in an area," Dr. Buinewicz says.

O'Brien received her first treatment during a lunch break, and says it's painless.

"It's going to be great because it's not invasive, so I can keep going on and being a mom and working," O'Brien said.

She says she already sees results after the first treatment.

"I can do this and feel better about myself, and look better in clothes or in a bathing suit, then I will be happier," O'Brien says.

The technology is cleared by the Food and Drug Administration to treat sports injuries. Approval is pending for the cellulite procedure.

It costs about $1,800 for a series of eight 20-minute treatments. Results should last for at least a year.

Ninety percent of all women have cellulite somewhere on their body.
