Stem cells are considered by many to be the key to curing disease. They start out "neutral," but can become every kind of body tissue through "differentiation."

New York state has awarded $14.5 million in grants to promote stem cell research.
The 25 institutions receiving one-year development grants are just the beginning -- Gov. Eliot Spitzer says the state's efforts will contribute $600 million in stem cell research in the next 11 years. The grants were distributed in varying amounts between $100,000 and $1 million.
They are intended to increase the capacity of New York institutions to engage in stem cell research.
Spitzer and Lt. Gov. David Paterson announced the funding Monday, about eight months after a stem cell research initiative was incorporated into this fiscal year's budget.
