Still More Than Double National Average
NEW YORK (AP) ―
The New York City Health Department says that tuberculosis has reached an all-time low in the city, but is still more than double the national rate.
In 2007, a total of 914 cases were reported. That's 4 percent fewer than in 2006 and a 76 percent decrease from the high levels reported in the early 1990s.
New York City's rate of confirmed TB cases in 2007 was 11.4 per 100,000 people, compared to the national rate of 4.4 cases per 100,000.
Immigrant New Yorkers accounted for 71 percent of new cases in 2007.
