The image of Ryan quickly spread across the Internet and made its way onto the back pages of New York tabloids.

Rex Ryan is apologizing after he was caught on camera making an obscene gesture to a rival team's fans. Sports headline writers are having a field day, saying Ryan became a bird brain by his crass act of flipping an obscene gesture at boisterous Dolphins fans who insulted his team in Florida over the weekend. But fans of the man who almost took the Jets to the big game are standing by Rex.

They saw. They kicked some butt. They talked. They got their butts kicked. They regrouped. They talked some more. They kicked some more butt. And they ended their season with a thud. The Jets did it all in 2009 except win the franchise's first Super Bowl championship in 41 years. Along the way they set new standards for trash talking and walking the walk after talking the talk. But it wasn't all rosy. They also proved at times to be the "same old Jets" before realizing that type of play is old and busted. With that, here's a positional grade breakdown of the season that was.

From a pure statistics standpoint the Jets' defense was the best unit in football this season. But a more refined look shows while it did a great job in its first year under Rex Ryan, it has some pretty glaring deficiencies that must be addressed.

When all was said and done on Sunday, Mark Sanchez was hardly the reason the Jets' Super Bowl dreams died in Indianapolis. On the contrary, he's the main reason why the AFC Championship game was even competitive. Sanchez arrived as the much-ballyhooed fifth overall pick in the draft who many thought the Jets mortgaged too much on. And early on, the naysayers looked like geniuses. But, many chose to sit back and let this thing play itself out. What we all ended up seeing was the development of a player who will without question be a star in this league for many years. <br />
