Bank Robber 'Preppy Bandit' Defies Police
NEW YORK (CBS) ―
He walks in wearing a buttoned down shirt, a sporty cap and glasses. At his side he carries a soft-sided briefcase, which enhances his appearance as a "normal" bank customer. Little do the tellers know, he is "the preppy bandit," and he's on a banking spree. CBS 2 HD has exclusive video of the well-dressed bank robber in action. "Just very calm, walks in, walks up to the teller, presents his information, gets his money and he's out the door in less than one minute," said Lieutenant James Murphy of the New York State Police. Murphy says the routine is always the same. The suspect hands a teller a note announcing a robbery and demanding cash. He grabs the greenbacks, stuffs them into a soft-sided briefcase, then walks out the door. No violence, no fuss. Since February, the "preppy bandit" has robbed at least nine banks in eight cities in New York and Connecticut. Investigators in both states are working together, trying to find the robber before he strikes again. They are searching for any clue that could break the case. While closely studying surveillance photos and video, New York State Police noticed something unusual about how the robber uses his hands. So CBS 2 HD asked hand surgeon, Richard Magill of the Westchester Medical Center, to review the evidence. What he found might end up being the key to catching the seemingly flawless robber. "Based on the video and pictures I've seen, he does have a couple characteristic postures which occur in rheurnatoid arthritis," said Magill. In addition to possibly having arthritis, the suspect is a white male, believed to be in his late 40's, and about 5'7''. "We're hoping someone's going to recognize him from the photos you are showing this evening and give us a call," said Lt. Murphy.
New York State Police urges anyone who might have information on the whereabouts of the suspect to call (845) 677-7300.
