New York, NY: March 16, 2009 Many experts now believe that breast cancer is conquerable. But the torrent of information about the latest breast cancer research, treatment options and prevention can be confusing and overwhelming. On Sunday, April 26, the 92nd Street Y brings together three of the leading breast cancer organizations, top scientists and researchers, and breast cancer survivors to provide clear and current information on the disease. "The 92nd Street Y is dedicated to providing information that helps people make informed decisions," said Stacey Eisler, Deputy Director of the 92nd Street Y May Center for Health, Fitness and Sport. "With scientific communities moving toward collaboration, we thought it was time for our community to benefit from such cooperation. We are thrilled to have some of the most respected names in the breast cancer field as our partners in this unprecedented gathering."
The symposium's opening session offers an update on current research from leading scientists in the field senior scholar for the Avon Foundation Breast Cancer Crusade (Paul E. Goss, MD, PhD, FRCPC, FRCP), and the chief scientific advisors of The Breast Cancer Research Foundation (Larry Norton, M.D.) and Susan G. Komen for the Cure (Eric P. Winer, M.D.), moderated by broadcast journalist Emily Senay, M.D. The closing session, moderated by NBC Today anchor, Dateline correspondent and breast cancer survivor Hoda Kotb, features a panel of prominent women who share their experiences with breast cancer. Four concurrent lectures are offered between the plenary sessions, and participants may attend any two. Throughout the afternoon, from 12 to 4 pm, professional staff from Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center (MSKCC) offer free information on cancer prevention, care and support services.
The Sunday afternoon symposium runs from 12:30 to 5:45 p.m. Tickets are $39 and include the opening and closing general sessions and a choice of two concurrent sessions in-between.
The 92nd Street Y, which is committed to making its programs available to everyone, is working with MSKCC's Breast Examination Center of Harlem and MSKCC's affiliated organization, the Ralph Lauren Center for Cancer Care and Prevention, to provide a limited number of clinic patients and volunteers with free admission to the symposium. The Y encourages those who may be unable to attend the symposium for financial reasons to apply for assistance through the Y's scholarship program, which awards $1 million in scholarships annually to 92Y programs.
Taking the Symposium Nationwide
In addition to the hundreds of people who may attend the symposium at the 92nd Street Y, hundreds more in Idaho, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Ontario and elsewhere are planning to participate via the 92nd Street Y's satellite broadcast program, Live from NY's 92nd Street Y, a subscription service that brings the Y's programming to communities around North America.
