CBS 2 HD will join more than 20,000 people this weekend in Central Park to run breast cancer out of town at the Susan G. Komen Race For The Cure.
On Sunday morning, a wave of pink will descend on Central Park.
"It's just so nice to see so many people come out and support such a great cause," a participant said at last year's event.
The walkers and runners in New York City are so dedicated, they've raised more than $34 million in the last 17 years.
Dara Richardson, their new C.E.O., is a doctor and breast cancer survivor, and says most of the money stays right in the community.
"They provide really excellent direct services, whether it be counseling, whether it be support, whether it be treatment recommendations," she said.
The Susan G. Komen For the Cure foundation has raised more than $1 billion dollars to fight this killer, and it all started with a promise between two sisters - a promise from Nancy Brinker to her sister Susan Komen who was dying from breast cancer.
"Right before she died, she looked at me one night,.and asked me if I would do something to help her cure this disease," Nancy Brinker told CBS 2 HD. "And I looked at her that night and I promised her I would."
"People in the past didn't even want to speak about breast cancer, but because of Nancy Brinker, she has really made it ok for people to talk about it. But also more importantly, she's made it very ok for people to know that they can speak about it if they have the disease and they can get the help and treatment that they need as opposed to hiding, which is what many women in the past used to do," Richardson added.
Now, they fight breast cancer together.
The five kilometer walk/run benefiting breast cancer research will begin Sunday at 9:00 am at Central Park West and 77th Street.
