Teams are the heart and soul of the Komen NYC Race for the Cure®. They contribute to the event's spirit and sense of community and raise large amounts of pledge dollars.
Team Big Apple Cluster, The Links, Incorporated was formed in 2008. The 25-member team raised $3,000 in its first year.
"As Links members, we wanted to contribute in some small way to defeating a disease which primarily impacts women and has affected so many of our Links sisters. It makes this a very personal fight for Links women," said Marcia Bayne Smith, team captain. "Another major, and equally important reason, is our desire to support our Links sister, Komen Greater NYC CEO Dara Richardson-Heron."
The team is made up of members of various Links chapters in the New York/New Jersey metropolitan area "The Big Apple Cluster." In addition, many chapter members invited their family and friends to participate.
"Several members of our team have been personally impacted by breast cancer," said Smith. "While many have not personally struggled against the disease, we have been touched as we accompanied a mother, sister, family member or friend through the difficult journey of diagnosis, treatment decisions and follow up care," she explained. "There are very, very few of us who have been exempt from some level of involvement with breast cancer."
Every chapter in the Big Apple Cluster made a commitment to support the team in two ways whether it plans to do the Race or not. Chapter members are expected to:
- Make a donation (including soliciting a matching donation from their employers, when appropriate)
- Recruit team members.
The team raises money by also getting family and friends to donate and seek matching employer gifts.
Team members met early on Race Day last year. "We came to the appointed spot, took photos, enjoyed the camaraderie, and encouraged each other to go the distance," recalled Smith. "Just being together and experiencing the opportunity to participate in this worthwhile cause was special."
