Port Authority To Tackle Airport Congestion Issue
NEW YORK (CBS) ―
The Port Authority Board of Commissioners is expected to take a major step toward dealing with airport congestion Thursday. The board is expected to green light a plan aimed at reducing delays and improving service.
If you have ever waited on the tarmac while sitting in a plane you know how long and stressful airport congestion can be. To ease the problem the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey is looking a new funding proposal.
The board of commissioners is considering funding for the study and design of runway and access projects. The cost will be $5 million and the hope is that they will ease delays on the taxiways and lead to improved efficiency.
This would be part of the $150 million runway access improvement / JFK delay reduction program the board approved in 2006, and entail:
- construction of aircraft departure hold-pads, which would provide additional space to queue.
- the extension of various taxiways to reduce bottlenecks.
- the construction of new taxiways and the reconfiguration of existing taxiways.
