Baseball Hospitalizes Pitcher
12-Year-Old On Life Support After Heart Stopped
WAYNE (AP) ―
A 12-year-old boy who was pitching in a local baseball league was hospitalized in critical condition after being struck in the chest by a line drive that stopped his heart.
Steven Domalewski was on the mound about 45 feet from home plate Tuesday night when the batter hit a line drive that struck him. Domalewski had to be revived on the field, and was rushed to St. Joseph's Regional Medical Center in Paterson.
"We need prayers more than anything," the boy's aunt, Marie Fullerton told The Record of Bergen County for Friday's newspapers.
The boy's family told the newspaper he was on life support in the intensive care unit. The hospital would not release information about his condition Friday.
Three spectators at the game, including a dentist, rushed onto the field and began cardiopulmonary resuscitation on the boy. The Wayne Police Athletic League, which ran the game, has a defibrillator at the field, but it was not used because CPR was started so quickly on the boy, said Ted Hanenberg, the group's president.
The PAL requires protective batting helmets and catching equipment, but only requires that catchers wear chest protection.
