Con Ed Workers Threaten To Strike
NEW YORK (CBS) ―
Some 9,000 Consolidated Edison workers are threatening to strike Sunday morning if contract talks don't improve.
Joe Flaherty, a spokesman for the Utility Workers Union of America said Con Ed is refusing to budge on wages and medical costs, as well as a proposal that workers who retire while on workers' compensation have to repay benefits from their pensions.
He added that it appears Con Ed is trying to provoke a strike.
Con Edison spokesman Michael Clendenin declined to comment on negotiations but says managers are prepared to handle a strike.
The last contract negotiation four years ago went right down to the wire, being resolved right at the strike deadline.
The workers last went on strike in 1983 for nine weeks.
