Hundreds Left Homeless After Harlem Fire

NEW YORK (CBS) ― More than 200 residents were left homeless after a fire tore through their Harlem apartment building Friday evening. Many ran for their lives as sparks flew and chunks of flaming debris tumbled down.

People huddled under nearby awnings and stores for safety, and watched as their home went up in flames. The fire started around 8:30 pm in a fifth floor apartment that was under renovation. Flames quickly spread to the sixth floor and the roof.

Over 150 firefighters worked to bring the fire under control. Two firefighters and two residents suffered minor injuries.

The Red Cross is offering shelter to the approximately 200 people left homeless by the fire.
