Family Escapes Serious Injury In Lightning Strike

PHILLIPSBURG, N.J. (AP) ― A family of four apparently escaped serious injury tonight when lightning struck near them in Warren County, knocking all four to the ground.

The victims were among those who were at Walters Park in Phillipsburg for a Little League all-star baseball game, which was stopped when severe weather moved in around 8 p.m.

Witnesses say one of the boys had played in the game, and the family was headed to their car when the incident occurred.

Phillipsburg police Sgt. Shawn Carmody says the lightning apparently hit the ground near the family and they absorbed the shock. He wouldn't release their names, but said none of them had burn marks.

All four were conscious after the incident, but were unable to get off the ground.

They're being treated at area hospitals, but further details on their injuries were not immediately available.
