It's something we hear far too often: a shooting victim caught in the crossfire, gunned down accidentally.
It offers no comfort to those grieving, like the parents of 15-year-old Nathan Allsbrook, who was killed Sunday in Harlem.
Cherise Smith tried to compose herself before talking to CBS 2's Pablo Guzman about her now deceased son.
"I don't want to be here without my son. I want my son with me. I don't know what to do. I don't know what to do. I love his so much," said Smith.
Allsbrooks was shot and killed around 2:30 Sunday morning on the corner of 127th and Seventh Avenue, as he and a group of friends walked home from a party. He was all of 15-years-old. Police have since said it was the case of a "truly good kid being gunned down.
"I mean, he took care of me. He made sure I was alright," said Smith. "I hugged him and kissed him all the time. You know? I embraced him, and we had this bond."
Nathan's world was pretty well defined by his parents, friends and family say. The demanding Catholic college prep school he went to, Rice, was at one end of his block; his church, Greater Refuge Temple, was at the other end. But this one time, his folks loosened the reins to let him stay out late at a party less than three blocks away.
Sources close to the investigation say the incident started somewhere in a party Nathan had attended in a nearby project. Witnesses have said the victim wasn't directly involved in the fight.
It is the eight murder in the neighborhood so far in 2008. Last year at this time, there were only two.
