Baking The Big Apple: Heat Wave Hits NYC

Temps In Mid 90s To Overwhelm Tri-State Over Next 3 Days

NEW YORK (CBS) ― Although summer is two weeks away, the first heat wave of the year has arrived.

New Yorkers were treated to hazy, hot and humid weather Saturday, courtesy of a warm front easing its way north through the tri-state area. Temperatures are soaring to over 90 through the middle of next week, which are about 20 degrees above nomal.

There is an air quality alert in effect for NYC, Long Island, lower Hudson Valley and Connecticut.

High levels of ozone, combined with high temperatures and humidity will cause discomfort for those with respiratory conditions. These people are advised to take it easy, and limit their activities outside.

Also, the National Weather Service has issued an excessive heat watch for several counties in the tri-state area. The advisory will be in effect through Monday night.

Officials advise wearing light-colored, loose fitting clothing and drink plenty of water.

Here's your forecast for the rest of the heat wave:

Sunday: Hazy, hot and humid.

High: 95
Low: 74

You'll wake up Sunday morning and find temperatures already near 80 by 9 a.m. There is an isolated chance of a thunderstorm both Saturday and Sunday.

Monday: More heat.

High: 96
Low: 77

Tuesday: Warm again, late day storms.

High: 92
Low: 76
