There will be no retrial for John A. "Junior" Gotti, federal prosecutors announced on October 20. In September, the third time was not the charm for the U.S. government, or for Curtis Sliwa. Gotti was accused, in three separate trials, of racketeering and of ordering two 1992 attacks on Sliwa, founder of the Guardian Angels and radio talk show host, including one in which he was shot twice before escaping out the window of a taxi rigged to keep him trapped inside.
However, in each trial, the jury was deadlocked. Unable to reach a unanimous verdict, the judge each time called for a mistrial. The third mistrial occurred on Sept. 27, 2006, and Gotti himself remained free on $7 million bail.
