Tri-State Battles Heat Wave In Spring

NEW YORK (CBS) ― New Yorkers received a sudden and scorching taste of summer in spring on Saturday.  With temperatures soaring into the mid 90's and heat index values around 100, tri-state residents scrambled to stay cool. Even at night, it remained hazy and humid.

To make matters worse, temperatures are expected to reach the upper 90s Sunday and Monday.

Forecasters say little relief is expected until at least Wednesday, when a weak front is expected to drop temperatures back into the mid 80s.

An excessive heat warning is in effect for some counties across but most areas of the tri-state area are under heat advisories and excessive heat watches.

Air conditioners were plucked from store shelves, across the area. The Union Square P.C. Richard & Son store expects to sell 1,000 air conditioners over the weekend.

"I really need [an air conditioner,] said Evelyn Maldonado. "It's gonna be really hot," added Sharlyn Paulino.

People knew just what to do to avoid the brutal bake and burn - wear light clothing and drink lots of water.

Here's your forecast for the rest of the heat wave:

Sunday: Hazy, hot and humid.

High: 95
Low: 74

You'll wake up Sunday morning and find temperatures already near 80 by 9 a.m. There is an isolated chance of a thunderstorm both Saturday and Sunday.

Monday: More heat.

High: 96
Low: 77

Tuesday: Warm again, late day storms.

High: 92
Low: 76
