Closing The Gap! Danger At The Train Station!
CBS 2 News' Investigation Of Commuter Train Gap Injuries
NEW YORK (CBS) ―
On Sunday, August 6, a tourist from Minnesota was killed, run over by a train after falling through the gap between a Long Island Railroad car and the Woodside station platform.
-- On Monday, August 7, CBS 2 News discovered that the gap could be quite large at some LIRR stations. The station began asking hard questions to LIRR officials about the gap. They had no answers.
-- On Tuesday, August 8, CBS 2 News asked more hard questions. LIRR officials did not respond.
-- On Wednesday, August 9, CBS 2 News caught up with the president of LIRR. He insisted the railroad was as safe as possible, but was quick to point out that "safety is a relative thing."
-- On Thursday, August 10, in a CBS 2 News exclusive, a woman told her story of being seriously injured while falling through the gap between a Long Island Railroad car and a station platform.
-- On Friday, August 11, the Long Island Railroad announced new safety measures. They weren't going to do anything about closing the gap, but they were installing video cameras so conductors could see if passengers had fallen through.
Long Island Railroad Safety Web Page (Note: Makes No Mention of Gap Safety)-- Also on Friday, August 11, CBS 2 News discovered that gap injuries were not unique to the Long Island Railroad. The station obtained a report showing a significant number of gap injuries in the New Jersey Transit system.
