An arrest was made Tuesday in the shooting death of a New Jersey mother who was gunned down in front of her daughter at a YMCA. Police say it was a tip from an informant that helped them track down the victim's estranged husband, Kenneth Duckett, at a house in Brooklyn.
It was a smooth takedown as Essex detectives worked with federal marshals from the fugitive task force, who simply arrived at the house, knocked on the door, and escorted Duckett away.
Duckett had been on the lamb for 12 days, but a tipster brought the task force over from New Jersey to Brooklyn and picked him up without incident.
"It wasn't a big deal, they did it around the time when everybody was at work so that was good," said Sandra Keesh, who witnessed the arrest.
Duckett, 37, was staying with a friend in the neighborhood. He now faces the charge of murdering his estranged wife, Monica Paul, in front of their 11-year-old daughter.
"He's been formally charged with murder and various weapons offenses. Bail has been set at one million dollars," said Essex County Prosecutor Paula Dow.
The crime was especially horrendous since it occurred poolside at the Montclair YMCA during family swim night.
"That act literally shook the whole foundation of a very, very calm and nice neighborhood where people live and work together," Dow said.
Paul is well-known in the area and deeply mourned in Montclair. Duckett is being held in Brooklyn and awaiting transport and extradition back across the river.
