Cops Arrest Suspect In Off-Duty Officer Shooting
NEW YORK (CBS) ―
A suspect is now under arrest in the shooting of an off-duty police officer in the Bronx. The officer grazed in the forehead by a bullet is lucky to be alive.
The officer's son, Francoise Reeves, thinks his father is very fortunate to have literally dodged a bullet.
The off-duty officer, Antwane Reeves, was injured overnight as he was walking near 233 Street and White Plains Road. People in nearby stores heard shots.
"I came inside to buy a cup of tea and I heard a couple of shots ring off, so I took off," said Bronx resident Gilbert Lewis.
"I just heard shooting, like 9 to 10 shots," said store employee John Ahmed.
Reeves told police he was approached by a suspect who threatened him just after 12:30 a.m. Friday in Wakefield. Police say words were exchanged between Reeves and the individual.
"The individual leaves the scene. He apparently went to go get a gun, comes back and starts shooting at Reeves. Reeves then returned fire from his authorized off-duty weapon," said Police Commissioner Ray Kelly.
Police recovered a 9 mm handgun. Reeves was treated at Jacobi Medical Center and later released.
The man arrested, 26-year-old Michael Williams, was identified in a line-up. He is now being charged in connection with the shooting.
