Police say the fatal shooting of an attacker in a Manhattan condominium lobby appears to be justified.
The officer and a building worker were slashed with razor blades before the suspect was killed on Wednesday night. A second suspect, wielding a broken beer bottle, was wounded.
Police say the building's desk clerk had called the detective to discuss harassing telephone calls she'd received from an ex-boyfriend.
As they talked, two men entered the lobby of the six-story Chinatown building and asked if there were rooms for rent.
Police say that when the receptionist told the men they weren't in a hotel, they jumped the detective and slashed his head. The attackers then hurtled over the reception desk and began mauling the receptionist.
The detective fired 10 shots and hit both suspects twice.
