The New York Yankees are getting a new stadium. Groundbreaking at the site was Wednesday.
Call it "The House That Jeter & A-Rod Built." Construction officially began on a new Yankee Stadium Wednesday. The atmosphere, elaborate setup and packed dais were all clear signs this is something big, something befitting the Yankees' preference for the grandiose.
The cost of the stadium? More than a billion dollars.
"It's going to add value to this area. And you know most importantly, it's going to add jobs," asid Bronx Borough President Adolpho Carrion, Jr.
The stadium will seat 51,000 fans and is scheduled to open in 2009 on the current site of the Macombs Dam and John Mullaly parks.
"The new stadium will present new comforts, new features and be state of the art in every way. It will have comfortable seating, great service and new entertainment venues" said Yankees President Randy Levine.
But the stadium's location is a source of contention and anger in this neighborhood. Demonstrators and residents at the groundbreaking said they are angry over lost open space and shade trees.
"We're not going to have no place to run now," said Ariana Lacantara of the Bronx. "You can run on the sidewalk."
Hardcore Yankee fans say the stadium is good news, park or no park.
"I love the Yankees, so I'm glad they're staying in New York," said one fan.
