NYPA Approves Contract For Power Plant In Queens
NEW YORK (AP) ―
The New York Power Authority has approved a contract for the construction of a new natural gas-fueled generating plant in Astoria, Queens, that would supply power to the city's schools, public housing, hospitals and subways.
The Power Authority says the contract went to Astoria Energy.
Gov. David Paterson said Tuesday that the new facility will lead to additional economic generating capacity "while curbing pollution and greenhouse gas emissions."
The Power Authority says the plant will have 500 megawatts of generating capacity and consume 30 percent less fuel per unit of electricity than a conventional power plant. The new facility is expected to be in service by 2011.
The plans for the plant still require the approval of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, the Port Authority and the city Housing Authority.
