Five years ago, the world could have never imagined what this day, September 11th, would eventually come to mean. It was a morning much like this one that two planes were flown into the Twin Towers, changing the city and the nation forever.
Today, moments of silence will mark the minutes the planes hit and the towers fell.
September 11, 2001, American Airlines Flight 11 struck the North Tower at 8:46 a.m.
At 9:03a.m. United Airlines Flight 174 hit the South Tower.
The South Tower collapsed by 9:59 a.m. and at 10:29 a.m. the North Tower crumbled to the ground.
On that dark day, Diana Stewart lost her husband Michael James Stewart. Now, five years later, she will stand among 200 spouses, partners and significant others who will be reading the names of those killed in the attack.
"The notion of reading names we realized was very important, a sensitive issue and very honorable," said Diana.
She went on to say "People left this world from those buildings in various degrees of difficulties so at the time the boys thought it was important to honor their father and honor all these other people, so I am following in their footsteps."
"I think it's important because its the city's way of telling us we haven't been forgotten," said Diana's son.
During this year's ceremony, family members will lay flowers on the site to honor the memory of the thousands of men and women who died here.
For Diana, along with the memories of her husband, 9/11 has also become a day for her to reach out to others in the world who are in pain, like she says so many people reached out to her.
"We continue to live, that's really the best revenge to live, and continue to do what was good," said Diana.
