Officials Investigate Falling Tree Tragedy On L.I.

Toppled Tree Crushes 2 Cars, 1 Person Dead

ROSLYN HEIGHTS, N.Y. (CBS) ― Nassau County officials are trying to determine who is responsible for a falling tree that killed a man in Roslyn.

The gigantic, leaning tree that Roslyn Heights residents often complained about, toppled onto two cars Saturday, leaving one person dead and another injured.

"Very bad…very sad," said Magdy Elsirgany. "I understand one person died, the other person they took to the hospital." "It's horrible," added Lori Baldasano.

The tree, which was on public property on a stretch of IU Willets Road was described by neighbors to defy gravity by leaning precariously toward the road.

Donna Paradise lives near the tree. She predicted an accident would happen in that area long ago, and tried to get local officials to fix it.

"A limb fell a while ago and I kept saying the tree the tree is going to fall," Paradise said.
