White Plains To Increase Sales Tax On June 1st
WHITE PLAINS (AP) ―
The city sales tax in White Plains will jump a quarter-percent on June 1st. The Common Council approved the increase Tuesday night - which means customers will pay a total of eight-and-a-eighth percent in sales taxes at the register.
The council is looking for ways to reduce the property tax increase - which is still going too increase by 4.9 percent, even with the higher sales tax.
Mayor Joseph Delfino says a sales tax transfers the burden of running the city to the estimated 200,000 or so people who visit daily to work or shop. White Plains will keep two-and-a-quarter percent of the sales tax. The state, county and the M-T-A share the rest of the sales tax.
Financial analysts say it's risky for White Plains to rely on a tax that is sensitive to the economy. The increase will push total sales-tax collections to about $51 million in the fiscal year that begins July 1st, amounting to a third of all city revenues.
