Man Who Went Overboard In NJ An Apparent Suicide

CAPE MAY POINT, N.J. (CBS) ― The death of a New Jersey man who went overboard from a whale-watching boat off Cape May this week was an apparent suicide.

Relatives of 51-year-old Ajit Modi told state police he was despondent, and several passengers said he acted strangely on the dock and aboard the Spirit of Cape May, an 85-foot vessel.

The Plainsboro man was last seen about 10:15 a.m. Thursday, not long after the boat pulled away from shore, and one passenger said Modi appeared to go into the water on purpose. His body was recovered near the Cape May-Lewes Ferry Terminal a few hours later after being spotted from a Coast Guard helicopter.

An autopsy was performed, but the results will not be released for several weeks.
