Legend has it that green apples were first grown in the Big Apple. Now there's a push to make them the official New York City fruit.
Councilman James Gennaro says he'll introduce a resolution to celebrate the Newtown Pippin apple as the city's apple.
Newtown Pippins are said to originate in Newtown -- now called Elmhurst, Queens -- around the year 1730.
Gennaro says New Yorkers love all apples -- but the world should know the Newtown Pippin as New York City's own.
