Ex-Arabic School Principal's Case Dismissed In NYC
NEW YORK (AP) ―
The lawsuit filed by the founding principal of an Arabic-language school in Brooklyn has been dismissed.
Debbie Almontaser, the former principal of Khalil Gibran International Academy, had claimed her First Amendment rights were violated when she was fired in 2007 for not condemning the word "intifada" on a T-shirt unaffiliated with the school.
In an interview with the New York Post, Almontaser said the word had non-violent origins and literally meant "shaking off."
Federal Judge Sidney Stein dismissed the case against the education department, its chancellor and Mayor Michael Bloomberg in Manhattan Tuesday.
Stein said Almontaser made her statements as an administrator and therefore was "not protected by the First Amendment."
Almontaser's lawyer didn't respond to a message.
